PAN proposed the concept of 'Prior Informed Consent' (PIC) in the FAO Code of Conduct, which is now embodied and legally enforceable in the international Rotterdam Convention. PIC is an early warning system about hazardous pesticides that allows governments to prevent imports of some of these chemicals.

Stockholm Convention
PAN's first campaign to eliminate the 'Dirty Dozen' classes of pesticides (18 chemicals) also had excellent success, resulting in widespread bans on 16 of these, and nine of them are now incorporated into the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which aims to eliminate global production and use (with more expected).

Basel Convention
The goal is "environmentally sound management" (ESM), the aim of which is to protect human health and the environment by minimizing hazardous waste production whenever possible. ESM means addressing the issue through an "integrated life-cycle approach", which involves strong controls from the generation of hazardous waste to its storage, transport, treatment, reuse, recycling, recovery and final disposal.
