From 2000 to 2004, PAN Africa led a training program in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in cotton production in the district of Velingara (south east Senegal): 583 farmers from 72 villages were trained. The evaluation of the training program has shown that all the farmers trained have mastered the IPM methodology well, are more aware of the hazards and other issues related to pesticides and of the IPM benefits. The training led to a decrease in pesticide use and other behavioural changes in crop management including analysing the field before any intervention, use of natural products for crop protection, and the use of manure and compost.
